Minister Says MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing secret matters in any vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This wider security situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of official operations, from transport use to discussions habits.
