A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
