Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
