Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
